Is organic tea more expensive than regular or conventional tea?
Davidson’s endeavors to be fully competitive with “conventional” teas in the marketplace. Organic teas can be consumed for basically the same cost as a conventionally produced tea but with much more peace of mind about what went into the growing and processing of tea. You see, unlike a tomato or an apple, tea cannot even be washed after harvesting. Water initiates the oxidation process, which turns green tea into black or oolong tea, and also develops caffeine and other enzymes. Water would ruin the colors and integrity of tiny fragile herbs. The bottom line then, is that whatever has been sprayed on the leaves or worked into the soil, brews directly into the cup. So, shouldn’t your tea really be organic?
Additionally, given our direct ownership of tea gardens, Davidson's not only ensures utmost product quality and freshness, but also guarantees the most competitive tea prices in the marketplace.

Who blends and packages your tea?
Unlike most companies, who outsource their blending and packaging, Davidson’s blends and packages their own tea in their organic certified facility in Sparks, NV. This ensures complete vertical integration and product integrity of our supply chain - teas from our own farms, blending in our own USDA Organic certified facility and packaging on our own machines within the same facility.

How much caffeine does tea have?
It is quite difficult to gauge how much caffeine is in tea, because it depends on so many factors: the tea itself, how much is used in a cup and how long it is brewed. Below is a summary of caffeine in tea compared to cola and coffee.
Caffeine Content in an 8oz cup*
Coffee: 110 mg
Cola: 46 mg
Black Tea: 40 mg
Oolong Tea: 30 mg
Green Tea: 20 mg
White Tea: 15 mg
Herbal Tea: 0 mg
*Caffeine contents in tea averaged for clarity. Brewing times, brands, net weight, varieties etc. can affect these figures dramatically.

What is the difference between decaffeinated and herbal tea?
Decaffeinated tea is derived from the camellia sinensis plant, from which the caffeine has been removed (technically, all decaffeinated teas have appx. 2% caffeine that can not be removed, e.g. even a Decaf. Green tea will have appx. 2% caffeine remain after the decaffeination process), through one of 3 possible decaffeination processes – ethyl acetate, CO2 and steam. Herbal tea, on the other hand, is not really tea at all, but is herbs brewed in the same way that tea is brewed. Herbs and herbal blends are sometimes referred to as tisanes and never had any caffeine to begin with.
Davidson’s teas are decaffeinated under the CO2 extraction process, often referred to as "Effervescence". The tea is placed in a pressurized chamber, and Carbon Dioxide, an inert gas, is pumped in and locks on and extracts the caffeine from the tea leaves. This process is beneficial, as it does not leave any chemical residues or reduction in flavor. The process also maintains antioxidant levels and the flavor quality. The best advantage of CO2 is that it does not extract the polyphenols or the macronol oils. In other processes like the water Ethyl Acetates, approximately 40% of the polyphenols are removed, thus making the tea deficient of the vital flavor or health benefits.

What is the difference between White, Green, Oolong and Black tea?
All teas originate from the same botanical species, the Camellia Sinensis plant. Teas are categorized by the drying and oxidation process they undergo.
• White tea is the least processed – only being plucked and dried. • Green tea undergoes a small amount of processing and is then steam or dry heated to stop oxidization. • Oolongs (which cover a wide range of processes) usually have some physical manipulation done to them. In many respects, it is the most complicated tea to make, because the tea is only partially oxidized. That is like keeping a banana perfectly ripe (nature keeps it moving towards being overripe). However, the reward for all that hard work is tea with great body, and the most intense and varied aroma and flavors. It breaks down the cellulose within the tea leaf to bring out the flavors. Oxidation is between 10% to 75%. • Black teas are fully oxidized. The tea leaf is cut and bruised, bringing out the various flavors nascent in the leaf. The “withered” and “rolled” leaves change color to brown, then black. This natural process is called oxidation and is similar to the ripening of a banana (from yellow to brown and finally becoming black).
After that all tea is dried, so that it can be shipped to great distances. Overall, the oxidation process is what changes the character of the tea and gives it more body.

What is the best way to store loose leaf teas?
It is fresh air, oxygen to be specific, that robs the flavor from loose leaf teas. Store the teas in an air tight container away from moisture and direct sunlight. Don't store teas in the refrigerator or freezer. The cooler temperatures are not helpful: there is moisture, and the delicate leaves will pick up strong odors from other foods in the refrigerator.

I’m gluten sensitive - can I drink Davidson’s Organic Teas?

What is the expiration date on your teas?
Remember, Davidson’s uses no chemical preservatives or artificial flavor enhancers of any kind in our teas. So our tea is a natural product and will age, naturally! On average a box/bag of tea will last for 2 years. Tea should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, preferably in an air-tight container or tupperware and away from direct sunlight for best flavor retention and freshness.

Is it safe to give tea to my children?
While not presuming to advise, tea drinking has been and still is a family tradition in many areas of the world. The tea ceremony held while “at Grandma’s” is a fond memory of many in this country. The tradition of the “tea party” is still being passed down to the next generation of tea lovers, also. In general, it is considered safe to offer herbal teas (caffeine-free) to children, though we advise you consult your doctor before doing so. Our wonderful Children's Tea generates daily mail from appreciative parents and children alike. What could be more delightful than an herbal, caffeine-free blend which brews rosy-pink in the cup, has real dried organic honey, and bursts with a fresh berry-punch flavor. All wrapped up in a charming package.

What are your natural flavors comprised of?
Our natural flavors are Organic Certified or Organic Compliant as well as Kosher Certified flavors, to be used strictly per USDA National Organic Program (NOP) standards. The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) allows the use of natural flavors in products labeled as “Organic” if they comply with provisions established in the USDA NOP (7 CFR Part 205). Our natural flavors are derived either directly or indirectly from essential oils, essences, extractives and distillates of true spices, fruits, vegetables, herbs, barks, buds, roots, leaves and similar plant materials. Our natural flavors DO NOT contain synthetic solvents, artificial preservatives, synthetic emulsifiers, artificial processing aids, soy or MSG (monosodium glutamate) components, agricultural sewage sludge derivatives, ionizing radiation or derived from a GMO or GE (genetically modified organism or genetically engineered) source. All natural flavor suppliers’ documentation is verified as part of Davidson’s organic inspection and approved for use. Though we are unable to specifically disclose the precise flavor name in each tea blend due to company proprietary information, our natural flavors come in a dry crystallized format as well as a liquid flavor.

Can caffeine content be removed by brewing once for 1 minute and then re-brewing?
There is no science on this method, but many claim that caffeine can be reduced by 50% using this method. Customers that are sensitive to caffeine should limit themselves to decaffeinated and herbal varieties.

Are full-leaf teas better than tea bags?
Each type has its own benefits. Tea bags are offered in a bewildering variety and can have complex flavor profiles, which can’t be duplicated in loose-leaf blends. Loose-leaf varieties tend to have more subtle and complex characters, and are more likely to be enjoyed on their own.

As such, tea leaves, herbs, spices or flowers have no agricultural genetically modified history. USDA organic requirements prohibits the use of any genetically engineered ingredients, and hence, we see no reason to get non-GMO verified as part of another certification to add to our label. When you buy Davidson’s Organic Teas, you have the USDA organic seal’s confidence of drinking a beverage you love without any GMO components.

Are your teas tested for fluoride content?
We randomly have our tea products tested for fluoride at an independent laboratory and tests results have been negative. Some plants, including the tea plant (camellia sinensis), are inherently able to uptake and accumulate relatively high quantities of fluoride. The soil and water conditions where the tea plant is grown, as well as the methods of cultivation, are factors that can determine fluoride levels in the tea leaf. Some studies have also shown a correlation between lower quality teas having higher fluoride content and higher quality teas having lower fluoride content. Other studies have shown high fluoride in some conventionally produced teas using high doses of nitrogen in the form of urea or tea produced in close proximity to cities. However, majority of our teas are organically produced in the pollution free high altitude areas of Darjeeling and Assam, India, and the Yunnan Province, China, where we also take full care of environmental parameters by regularly planting trees and maintaining eco-balance. Lastly, depending on the quality of water you use for brewing tea, some water sources have high level of fluorides (appx. 2 or more ppm in drinking water).
Is your packaging recyclable?
Most of our packaging materials (filter tea bags, boxes, cases, etc.) are 100% recyclable, where facilities accept.
Our filter tea bags are made from a mixture of natural wood pulp and abaca plant fiber material, oxygen-bleached (no chemicals are used to treat/sanitize the filter bag), free from plastics and plasticizers, FDA-, USDA- and NOP-approved, as well as bio-degradable and compostable. Slight discoloring of filter bags may occur in flavored tea blends due to the absorption of some citrus organic compliant flavoring in the mesh filter paper. Tea tags are made from unbleached paper and attached with a natural cotton string. Our tea bag overwraps are made from both paper and foil materials. We also use 100% post-consumer recycled materials where possible in our packaging boxes and cases. In summary, our packaging is designed to ensure the freshest product possible for our consumers, while we actively pursue alternative materials (which requires extensive testing and analysis) for our packaging that is eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable. We recommend customers always use bulk loose leaf tea when possible, which takes perhaps only a minute or two more than a teabag and helps preserve the planet, as the most eco-friendly and sustainable option.

Do you offer individually wrapped teabags with or without tags?
Except for the 100ct unwrapped filter teabag box, our other teabag packaging formats come in flavor specific individually wrapped teabags packed inside each box. However, on occasion, due to supply chain issues or due to special promotions we offer to the BIG box stores (e.g. TJMaxx, Burlington, HomeGoods, Ross etc. to keep their costing down), we may offer teabags in “generic green color non-flavor specific wrappers”. Though our goal is to always offer our delicious teas in flavor specific printed wrappers, we also reserve the right to substitute flavor specific printed wrappers to generic wrappers due to any unforeseen supply chain issue we may experience. You can be rest assured that the tea in the generic wrappers matches the tea in the box in which it was, undergoing the same quality control parameters we have in place for our entire production line.

Do your teas contain naturally occurring plant phenol and polyphenolic compounds (tannins) since they aggravate some autoimmune disorders?
Some of our teas such as Rooibos contain a number of phenolic and polyphenolic compounds. But as far as it aggravating certain autoimmune disorders, we recommend you ask your herbalist for this specific information and validation.
Does your tea contain citrus peels that have high PH levels, which are detrimental to the tooth enamel?
We do not calculate PH levels in tea due to the fact that the % of citrus ingredients like lemon peel, orange peel etc. we use is very small in proportion to the blends we create. We do not believe the citrus components in our organic tea is detrimental to the tooth enamel. However, we highly recommend you consult your herbalist/dentist to ensure what levels are appropriate for you.

Does your Matcha Rooibos Powder contain EGCG's, the cancer fighting ingredient that green teas have?
There are many types of antioxidants found in various teas, fruits and vegetables. The anti-oxidant class (called flavonoids) known as catechins are only found in green tea, and these maybe the most potent of all. EGCG is a type of catechin that has the broadest and most potent cancer-fighting properties of all. For e.g., sixty percent of the catechin content of Matcha Green Powder tea is EGCG. One gram of matcha contains 105 mg of total catechin content, and roughly 61% is EGCG, since Matcha Green Powder is highly concentrated green tea stone grounded to fine powder, compared to a typical loose leaf tea.
On the other hand, Rooibos is not from the same family of tea plants (camellia sinensis) like black and green tea, and is rather a wild/raw "herb" grown in South Africa. Like regular tea, rooibos also contains flavonoids which act as antioxidants. While the most beneficial flavonoids of green tea is EGCG, the main flavonoids in rooibos are aspalathin and nothofagin. There are numerous studies that find rooibos even more effective at scavenging free radicals than green tea, but more work and research has to be done.

How much Vitamin C is in your pure herbs or tea blends, and particularly rosehips?
Some of our pure herbs, like rosehips, hibiscus flowers and cranberries are known for their high content of Vitamin C. Though we don’t know the exact content found in each herb/dried fruit, there is approximately 1,700 mg of Vitamin C in 100 gm of dried rosehips. You can purchase rosehip tea in teabags or in just bulk by the pound. Rosehip tea has a tangy, tart flavor and a pinkish color. Similarly, you can purchase most of our bulk loose leaf tea/herbs in bulk tea bag formats.
How do I store/preserve my organic teas and herbs?
Storage of organic teas vary based on the package format.
For bulk loose leaf teas/herbs, we recommend you store the tea in an air tight glass jar/canister away from light. Though you can store teas/herbs in plastic jars/canisters, we recommend against that method due to the interaction of some citrus blends with plastics (especially those made with cheap materials and petrochemicals).
For bulk unwrapped teas, they can be stored in its original packaging or also in glass jars/canisters, provided it is air tight and away from light.
For individually wrapped teas, we recommend you store them in its original packaging box since they are packaged to maintain a longer shelf life.
You may purchase glass jars (various sizes available) directly from us as well.

Are your teas affected from environmental contamination?
Many tea plantations are located in close proximity to urban areas or cities, and hence exposed to industrial contamination of all sorts (noise, air, water, pollution, smog etc.). However, Davidson’s only sources organic tea from small farmer tea estates and gardens that are in rural areas and/or high altitude areas away from such environmental toxic contamination, and relying on nature for agricultural nourishment, balance and purity. Davidson’s tea buyers travel the world days at a time, to visit these pristine natural eco-systems to bring you only the finest organic tea leaves. Additionally, we randomly test our teas for pesticides, heavy metals or other toxic substances, to validate our product integrity.
Do you analyze ingredients for microbial contamination, heavy metals as well as pesticide residues?
Davidson’s sources over 500+ certified organic ingredients from over 20+ origins (you can learn more about sourcing origins in “Our Footprint Map” under About Us). As part of our sourcing strategy from various vendors, we execute a 3-step process that meets our stringent sourcing requirements for ensuring the highest quality ingredients for our tea blends. We require all vendors to submit 1) lot-type ingredient sample, 2) a lot-specific pre-ship ingredient sample, and finally 3) we collect the lot-specific shipment ingredient sample upon arrival at our warehouse. Our Quality Control team evaluates all organoleptic properties for the ingredient across our 3-step process along with reviewing all necessary certificate of analysis (COA) documents representing test results for microorganisms, pesticide residues and heavy metals. While many are harmless, some can cause severe illness, where human health is at risk of being adversely affected by biological pathogens, disease-causing bacteria, and other toxins. We test for these contaminants to prevent illness and ensure optimal use of ingredients in our tea blends for your health and well-being.

Does Davidson’s have a food safety and quality control program as per the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)?
Davidson’s has a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) program in place and our Food Safety System includes the key elements required by FSMA, such as hazard analysis, oversight of key processes, monitoring of preventive controls, executing corrective actions as well as verifying implemented actions. Additionally, our Supply-Chain is a risk-assessed program, whereby we only buy products from approved suppliers who provide us with their operational certifications, ingredient specific COA and/or letters of guarantee, that remain confidential to Davidson's. Lastly, Davidson’s ensures all employees hired are qualified to perform their assigned duties, and permanent training is provided for current and new employees for food hygiene and food safety, to name a few key elements.
Does Davidson’s have a food safety program for foreign matter found in tea?
Because tea is an agricultural product, foreign matter is bound to occur during agricultural processing, just like you may find them in other fruits and vegetables. But unlike fruits/vegetables where they go through a wash cycle after harvesting to remove debris, pests, chemicals etc., tea cannot be washed after harvesting, but instead undergoes withering, rolling, oxidation, and/or drying/firing. These essential processing steps are what creates the health benefits found in tea today. Because Davidson’s cares about our customers, our Food Safety and Quality Control program addresses the possibility of findings in tea and herbs. According to Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 110.110 of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the FDA establishes the maximum levels of natural or unavoidable findings in foods for human use that present no health hazard. The FDA set these levels because it is economically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects, even though when foods are produced under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) following all regulations. The criteria considered is based on reported findings, and FDA interprets the findings considering available scientific information, such as ecology and the knowledge of how a product is grown, harvested, and processed. The FDA classifies findings in raw food as Extraneous Materials or Foreign Materials, that may occur pre-harvest or post-harvest. While every effort is made by the grower to limit these materials, it is practically impossible to exclude them from an agricultural crop. Hence, the presence of our Supply Chain Program and Food Safety and Quality Control program provides a holistic approach where we comprehensively evaluate our suppliers and their organic farming practices that retain the health benefits and nutritional content in ingredients, and then, manage the hazards of foreign matter exposure through our quality control procedures in place. Should you still have a concern, please free to contact us, so we may resolve it to your utmost satisfaction.

What is Proposition 65 and what does it have to do with heavy metals in teas?
Proposition 65 is a regulation that applies to any food product/service received or used in the State of California. It applies to over 800 chemicals identified as carcinogens and reproductive toxins, whether they are natural or artificial. Lead, for example, is one of the compounds monitored by national and international agencies. It’s a natural occurring element that is found in the environment, including soil. Lead is harmful to humans and animals if exposed, inhaled or consumed in high doses. This is why the food industry is paying special attention to control the content of lead in food and drinks. Prop 65 Safe Harbor Maximum Allowable Dose Level for lead indicates that product containing lead at 0.5 micrograms/day and higher must be labeled. However, the FDA indicates that a tolerable daily intake level of lead is 75 micrograms for adults and 6 micrograms for children. The federal safety standard set by the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) for lead in dietary supplements is no more than 10 ppm. International standards are often 5 ppm. Agencies don’t seem to agree on what the ideal tolerable parameter should be, but we assure customers that we choose suppliers who provide us with a certificate of analysis and other documentation showing the heavy metals content of their products, and that they conform to Prop 65 and/or national standards. Besides that, we carry out random tests to validate the results on lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic content to name a few compounds.

Why does tea turn cloudy or murky?
Cooler temperatures or refrigerating tea after brewing can cause caffeine and tannins (natural compounds) in tea to separate out, turning the tea murky or cloudy. Generally, higher-quality tea contains more tannins (because it is richer in solids) and is more likely to become cloudy. Unfiltered or hard water as well as natural minerals found in water can also make your tea cloudy. Cloudy tea does not make the tea unsuitable for your drinking pleasure. Apart from its visual appearance, the tea is just as good. To avoid the tea from becoming cloudy in the first place, steep and enjoy the hot tea right away. For drinking tea iced, do not add ice to hot tea, but instead, add the ice cubes to your drinking glass and then pour the hot tea over the ice cubes. Another suggestion is to not put the hot tea straight into the refrigerator after it's brewed. Let it cool at room temperature first and then refrigerate it. If the cloudy tea still bothers you, add hot water to your brewed tea, and it will instantly turn clear!

What are your SUP (Stand-Up Pouch) bags lined with?
Davidson's SUP (Stand-Up Pouch) bags are lined with either a Linear Low Density Polyethylene or a Metalized OPP (Oriented Polypropylene) Film, which are both materials that have improved oxygen and water vapor barrier properties, and are both FDA-Approved food grade materials used across the food industry. However, these SUP bags currently are not recyclable or compostable. We are actively looking for packaging that is both environmentally friendly as well as shelf stable for our products.

Can you tell me about your eco-friendly packaging?
Our teabag overwraps are made from both paper and foil materials. We also use 100% post-consumer recycled materials where possible in our packaging boxes and cases. In summary, our packaging is designed to ensure the freshest product possible for our consumers, while we actively pursue alternative materials (which require extensive testing and analysis) for our packaging that is eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable. We recommend customers always use bulk loose leaf tea when possible, which takes perhaps only a minute or two more than a teabag and helps preserve the planet, as the most eco-friendly and sustainable option.
